Sundance Festival Winner...Director Ava DuVernay!

Let me start by saying Congratulations to director Ava DuVernay for winning the 2012 Sundance “Best Director” award! Ms. DuVernay is now the first African-American woman to win the directing award in the dramatic category at Sundance film festival. For those who may not know the relevance of the Sundance Film Festival, it is held in January of each year in Utah. Known as the largest independent cinema festival in the United States, It has been around since 1978 founded by Sterling Van Wagenen. Not only was she the 1^st African-American to win this category award, she was the 1^st woman to win as a Director since Natalia Almada for El General (2009).

Admittedly, I did not know who Ms. DuVernay was prior to this morning (or so I thought) but I was pleasantly surprised to know that I’ve seen her work. In 2011, I caught the featured film “I Will Follow”, with Salli Richardson-Whitfield and Beverly Todd. A powerfully emotional film with surprisingly good acting (you know Salli has gotten much better over the years). She also directed a documentary I viewed titled “My Mic Sounds Nice” featuring a host of legendary divas in the rap industry. And now, it appears she’s out done herself with this latest project “Middle of Nowhere”, which she says deals with a women who has lost her husband to incarceration and now tries to maintain the marriage from outside the prison walls.

This California native and graduate of UCLA has had success in the film industry after creating The DuVernay Agency also known as DVA Media + Marking in 1999. Her agency works as a marketer and publicist for more than 120 films and television campaigns. This accolade certainly awards her the honor of being mentioned when referencing African-American Female Directors with the likes of Sanaa Hamri and Tanya Hamilton. The Strides made in Hollywood to give credence to the impact African-American women are having both in front of the camera and behind the scene are listless and lethargic at best. Yet, when greatness is achieved like in the form of the film “Middle of Nowhere” art has to be respected and honored.

With films like “Red Tails” coming out last week and proving to be a box office hit (Directed by African-American Anthony Hemingway), we now have a impactful indie film we need to see, which by the way has actor David Oyelowo from “Red Tails” playing a role. I’m happy to report that “Middle of Nowhere” was picked up for distribution by Participant Media AFFRM (African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement…DuVerany founded this org). Shortly, after the Sundance Festival. This ensures that we will be able to support this film by going on the internet to locate your local indie film theater and supporting our sister in her journey and supporting her art!

Award Winning Author Trice Hickman (a self-proclaimed Southern Girl) decided to take the plunge into the literary world after her then secure 9 to 5 job put her on waivers….that code for, she GOT FIRED! Although starting off as a indie book writer she soon garnered the attention of the publishing house of Kensington Publishing Corp came a calling. Dawn Nicole

99 vs. 1: who are you betting on?

The greatest trick the devil ever played was that he does not exist. The greatest trick the 1%ers created was that 1% is more powerful the 99%! Nowhere else in the mathematical world is this fact accepted. Yet, in our society we fret and frown that the awe inspiring "Richie Rich-ers" are holding the rest of us hostage. How are they able to pull this magic trick off?

We are not utilizing our two greatest strengths…Our collective power of the vote & our disposable incomes.

There is a version of “class warfare” going on and they call it “Occupy America Movement” which got its roots from Occupy Wall Street. Interesting enough that one would pick Wall Street as a place of protest. Especially, since Wall-Streeters have no pulse and primarily are not human! The movement has grown to become an international surge taking place in over 95 cities and 82 Countries! The 99%ers are said to desire economic and social equality. The problem is…I doubt if the 1% are going to wake up and decide “your right, we’ll just give you our money…you deserve it!” It’s not going to happen!!! This harkens back to memories of the Proletariat vs. the bourgeoisie. AND I think you know how that ended. It amazes me how the hoarders of power and money believe that at no point will the lower class get fed up to the point of no return?

By no means am I suggesting we 99%ers revolt into a revolutionary war [see Communist Manifesto]. However, I am hoping we revolt in a way that is far more effective. With our voting power we could become our own lobbyist. We could press for the laws we want passed by informing our Congressmen and Senators that if things aren’t changed they won’t be in office for long. Seems like a pretty easy concept yet it’s not. Why? M-O-N-E-Y…!!! They use money to influence or position. By offering our leaders to acquiesce they then in return deter us from continuing and reason with us why things should stay status quo (see our current tax argument). By using the argument that giving more tax breaks on the top 1% would increase the number of jobs they’d create is just plain dumb and has never played itself out in history….(you remember “HISTORY”? The one thing that is supposed to help us not make the same mistakes over and over again). I'm sure in our hearts none of us believe that argument but we’re still paralyzed to demand a common sense approach.

The Vote…a Constitutional right that holds the power to shape a nation but we are not using that right. Typically only about 50% of eligible voters actually vote in a Presidential election, and only about 35% vote in a Congressional election. WTH!?

Now, how can we influence BANKS, Congress & Big Corporations to regulate themselves and create a more fair reality for Americans? Choose how and where we will spend our money! The 1%ers rely on OUR income to maintain their 1% status. So, we are the ones to blame in the end. You choose to spend your money at Wall mart even though you know they have unfair working practices towards “women”. You choose to keep you money in traditional banks even though you know they caused the economic meltdown. Why won’t you make a stand by shopping at small business stores or placing you money in local Credit Unions? Oh I forgot,”Convenience” !!! You’d rather remain in near poverty and feed the extravagantly rich than drive 5 miles out of your way to support you local Credit Union which gives back to the community by granting local loans. We have the power to control our own destiny but because we’ve become lazy people we refuse to do so.

1%ers vs 99%ers….they win every time because they know who we are and how we think. God help us all!

Foreclosure….A Moral Crisis?

So far to date, we’ve had over 1 million plus foreclosures in the United States of America. In 2010, we had over 2.9 million US properties receive foreclosure fillings. Are the Banks going mad? Would they be willing to foreclose of every American? The answer….YEP!

The robber barons have the United States on lock. They are unchecked and have no Government oversight that really means anything. Let’s take a look at the current modus operandi of our big 5 economic giants. Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Bear Stearns and Lehman Brothers are essentially the President, Vice-President, Treasure Secretary, US Securities and Exchange Commission, and Congress. They systematically (driven by greed) constructed and pandered derivatives using mortgage instruments to make billions at the expense of the naïve would be homeowners and quite frankly at the expense of YOU…the smart ones! Because this calamity effects all of us not just the ones who’ve had the misfortune of having lost their part of the American Dream. But who, pray tell, is still on top? Who has not had one legal charge brought up with someone having to pay? I think you know the answer…

Foreclosure-the legal process by which the mortgage holder of lien holder gains its security back! However, here’s the tricky part: The person who’s claiming or suing you for a foreclosure is not the original granter of funds. In fact, I bet in most cases that original piece of useless paper has been traded and gambled on no less than 10 times since you sat down proudly at an Attorney’s table and signed on the dotted line. Is this process legal? Folks like Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin seem to think the answer is NO!!! The President and this administration have carted out several initiatives designed to urge the banks to work with homeowners who could be saved if their mortgages were restructured or if their principles adjusted. Yet, not one bank has stood up to meet the President, nor you, half way.

Why not? Do you believe the Banks are hurting now? I’ll help you as you ponder, Heck No! In fact, many economists have found that they are actually making more money now than during the years of pillaging. Banks have deceived all of us. Through powerful lobbyist they control YOUR Congress and keep things status quo. They make believe it’s really their money that they are lending out. I wonder have the “Occupiers of Wall Street” figured out that if they as American People took their monies out of the banks they would inflict serious damage to their working capital? Imagine if the same 2.9 million defaulted homeowners were to pull their monies, 401K’s, pension plans, stock options and savings out of nationalized banks and placed them into credit unions? Now, imagine this phenomenon caught momentum and another 100 million Americans followed suit. Where would the power lie?

Remember when the Big 5 came to Congress and said “If you let us fail….we all fail” and they believed it?! In business we are taught that when there is a vacuum, it is quickly filled. Are you the American backbone and the homes you live in “Too big to fail”? I guess not! Come on America Let’s get organized…where are our social and economic activists when you need them?

Perhaps the lobbyist got to them too?

The Extraordinary Life of Mr. Willie L. Harris

Like so many men his age, his creed and his race he found himself trapped in a maze of destruction. Yet, there was still something quite different about this man. To SAG or Not-to-SAG....That is the Question?!

Ok I got something to say! AND since this is my own platform, I guess I can say it! It has come to my attention that our community “the black community” has lost its damn mind…

Saggin!? Am I the only one who knows the origin of this ridiculous “trend” fashion expose? While it is unknown whether the base allegations that “saggin” originated & represents ones availability for sex in the prision systems, there is no doubt it did indeed begin in the Prison Systems. In prison a man may not have the use of a belt. So, many inmates were forced to wear clothing that did not fit properly. It was not a fashion style for them…it was yet another way to degrade them while incarcerated. And can you believe this “penguin walkin trend” has been around for 20 years now!? WTF?

I recently got into a bit of a repartee with another young man about whether this is a battle we “old heads” should fight? He believed we should move on to other more serious battles (although when I asked I did not get an answer as to which battles those might be)? In my opinion this is exactly the battle we as “African-Americans” should be having? Anytime a large majority of our community decides that modeling their appearance after “prison inmates” is cool and fashionable…..we have a DEADLY Problem. It is killing our self-respect & self-worth! Surely, there are better things to model a fashion trend after? Hey, I know… Let’s bring back the classic turn of the century “Black FACE” as a fashionable ideological statement! HELL, why not? If we’re going to degrade ourselves BY OURSELVES we might as well go ALLLLLLLL the way in. After all there bigger fish to fry….right?

I love what the President (you remember him…the first African-American President) had to say about the matter on MTV “laws banning the practice of wearing low-slung pants that expose one's underwear were "a waste of time". However, he did follow that up with the statement: "Having said that, brothers should pull up their pants. You are walking by your mother, your grandmother, your underwear is showing. What's wrong with that? Come on. Some people might not want to see your underwear. I’m one of them. Well, it may be a waste of time but several states are beginning to enact said laws. States like Florida, Georgia, Michigan, & Louisiana have all put fines in place to help deter the practice. Now I’m no fool (at least not usually). I know the more we talk about it and complain about it, the more those misguided young men are going to continue (Just like Rock n Roll).

So, how does it stop? Sorry, it doesn’t! L One thing I know very well…if you begin a stupid trend in the black community, IT NEVER GOES AWAY!!! Hell the “N” word began as a negative slur against African-Americans at the turn of the 20^th Century. We then adopted it as a “trend” and presto…it’s here to stay. Then we spend YEARS explaining how “it’s not a negative anymore because we’ve taken the connotation out of the word? Really? Now, what you’ve done is what you’re doing right now! You’re allowing others to degrade you to the point that you VOLUNTEER to adopt the degradation into your culture to ensure it never leaves there and in the end YOU WILL PERISH!

Is this a battle we should fight? I leave that up to you to decide. But remember this….no other culture on the face of the EARTH degrades themselves as much as the African-American male and female! Yes, WE who are the ancestors of Kemet and all the knowledge of the World. We are so lost we don’t know we’re lost! Stop fighting their wars and begin fighting OUR WAR! Our enemy is not other cultures, races or even drugs. Our enemy is IGNORANCE! AND HE IS WINNING…

P.S…..Saggin backwards, spells NIGGAS…..just sayin?

P.S.S. You want to stop “Saggin”??? WOMEN, the power is all yours! Yep, I said it. Men, may wear fashion trends because they think it’s cool or has “swag”. However, if a women (especially one your with) tells you it’s hideous and you won’t be around me, with me and certainly not IN ME dressed like that…. MEN WOULD STOP THIS SHIT TODAY…. Just sayin?

Who knew??? Adidias vs. Puma (friend or foe)?

First off, I’m 44 years old and a self acclaimed well read writer. However, my 16 y/o daughter brought to my attention a "should be known" fact.

Let me begin by saying I grew up the age of Run DMC and the American shoe (at least I thought) Adidias! Now, I'm a huge Puma fan (my comfort, stylish shoe of choice at least nowadays). What I did not know was that the two founders of both companies were brothers.

Adolph and Rudolf Dassler are the creators of Adidas (named for Founder AdiDassler) & Puma (by his brother Rudolf). The shoe companies began their roots dating back to pre-WWII. In fact, I was totally shocked to discover that they were the first to offer a “sponsorship” to a black athlete.

In 1936 during the Summer Olympics (held in Berlin, Germany), the brothers urged legendary Jesse Owens to wear their shoe. Now, I’m not sure if it was the shoes but Mr. Owens went on to win 4 Gold Medals that year.

This is where the story gets a bit tricky. Both brothers were members of the Nazi Party during the war. Although many have written that it was Rudolf that was the more vigilant towards its beliefs, I certainly don’t see the connection with supporting a black athlete from the US who’s competing in Germany against German Athletes. Then, in just a few short years join a party that hates everything not pure Anglo-Saxon (which by the way is even more bizarre since Hitler was not…pure blood Anglo).

Fast forward 50 years, a black rap group put Adidias on the mainstream map and the other company Puma cut its teeth as a very reputable “football” (we call it soccer) shoe which is played by many ethnically based countries like Kenya, Uruguay, France, Brazil, Japan to name a few. Both companies have been highly supported in our African-American communities!

So which is it?

Are both companies spin-offs from an old Nazi regime and now are being funded by billions of African-American dollars annually or are we merely giving thanks to founders who believed in and supported the “Negro” man long before it was fashionable by Nike & Converse?

How many of you have ever “Saged” your home? Of course I just made up the “saged” part, it’s really performing a ritualistic home cleansing…

Well, today was my 1^st and boy was it fun and refreshing! Now keep in mind, prior to my better half suggesting we needed to do it I had never heard of the process. I take that back…I did see it recently on an episode of “True Blood” but of course you can’t believe anything on that show (after all vampires are a part of society, huh?).

As it turns out smudging (as the ritual is commonly called) goes back thousands of years and is a part of the North American Indian ancestry. For the most part one uses a sage stick (lit only enough to begin producing smoke). White Sage is said to have the super-natural power of cleansing and driving out negative energies from people and places (I know a few people that need a SMUDGE BATH LOL). Once you have your smoke going really well, start at the front door offering a prayer and “smudging” or allowing the smoke to rise above windows, corners and behind doors while walking counter clockwise throughout your home. This is a waayy cool process that also leaves an amazing scent behind which I believe cleanses your mind & body as well.

Just so you know, I've taken it on my own and added two more steps in this fantastic cleansing ritual which I figured at the very least would not hurtJ! What in the Hell is a "Debt Ceiling" anyways...?

Ok what in the HELL is a “Debt Ceiling” anyways? If you’re like me (and most of you are) you had to look that new hot button political phrase up! Now, there’s a lot out there and depending on who you listen to…you could become even more confused. So, don’t worry just read what I’ve researched for you below (and tell your friends too).

Debt Ceiling(limit) for dummies (like me!?)

Many of you less informed may be asking “why are they raising the debt limit anyways”? Well first, they’ve raised that limit 70 times over the last 50 years! So, why haven’t you heard of this political process before? (Because politics have changed over the past 10 years or so) Those 435 members up there in D.C. used to resolve their disagreements among themselves. Now, it has become more common place to whine and complain they are not getting their way to YOU (the less informed). Now, correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t we vote to send them the D.C. because they were far smarter than “us” in regards to these very complicated measures? OOoppss I’m on a tangent again…(where was I?)

Oh yeah, the Debt Ceiling or limit was created as a simple watch dog for the President on borrowing and spending “carte blanche” during WWI. Denmark is the only other country that has one (yep... we finally have something in common with Denmark!). Now, each of us has or had a credit card at some point in our life. We also received a limit on that card based on what other folks thought we’d be able to pay back. The difference with the National Debt limit (ceiling) is they are giving a limit to themselves!? HUH, yep it’s like you getting a credit card and placing a limit yourself on “said credit card”. Then you argue with yourself about being fiscally responsible. Then... you get bored with yourself and you call your neighbors over and complain to them!

You’ve heard that if we go into default, we will soil our credit name with the world. The fact is we owe very little of our debt to others (our biggest debtor is China and that accounts for about 8% of the monies owed out). Most of the money owed is to ourselves (Military checks, SSN payments, Interests payments on US Bonds, etc…). At the start of a fiscal year Congress approves a budget and that budget included bills to be paid and money to be spent. If the debt limit doesn’t cover that budget EVERY SINGLE TIME THE LIMIT GETS RAISED….except this time??? In other words, the US ordered all this stuff and now the bill comes and they’re saying we don’t have the money because we’re being fiscally responsible (call me crazy, but isn’t that supposed to happen before you order the meal?)

Here’s the Kicker…the limit is supposed to handcuff the President. But, if it isn’t approved the President will have the executive power to decide what bills get paid and which won’t. In other words, he can and will get blamed for ALL spending and the entire Republican Party can say “we had nothing to do with all that crazy spending that the “immigrant half white/half black guy did”.

Well now that wasn’t too difficult was it?

Buy "AKAI" T.V.'s at your own Peril!!!

Normally, I would never use this platform as a means to blast anyone or any company simply because it’s too time consuming! But, enough is enough!!!

“AKAI” is a JOKE!!!! Akai electric co. ltd is an electronics company allegedly based out of Singapore. I say allegedly because I’ve not been able to nor do I know anyone who has confirmed this fact! Hell, it would not surprise me if they were based out of Boise, Idaho (no offense Idaho, but hey no one living there views my blog anyways J ) What I’m most upset with is that I recently bought a Akai 32inch T.V. with DVD and after less than 2 years the darn thing will not come on! Now, I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s bought an electronic device and had it go
"kerplunk"; however, when I surfed the web to find out what could be the issue I found hundreds of other consumers with the same damn complaint.

***ok footnote, the company was originally created by Akai Denki Kabushiki in 1929. It's now a subsidiary of Grande Holdings. Just wanted you to that I've done my homework :-)

Every one of them with the same issue….somewhere around the 2^nd year their T.V. mysteriously won’t come on. Wow, I got played. I sure wish I’d done my due diligence before I bought this T.V.? This is my admonishment to Akai and to Costco & Sams club who...by the way will not do a thing for you or any one of the thousands of unhappy American consumers who’ve bought this defective company’s product. Can you imagine what an Asian country would do if an American company sold trash products to their citizens and would not even try to correct or acknowledge the issues?

That’s right folks “Akai” reps give you the run-a-round, they will not answer emails sent, and the (800) number on the back of the T.V. not a in service (go figure)!!! Too boot, if you take the T.V. to a repair shop, they won't work on it. One repairman states, "I can fix it but the problem is going to happen again"; ... REALLY!?

It is my goal to see < that > this company along with Costco & SAMS Club (who also do absolutely nothing, yet they have no problem selling this crapola) held accountable and to re-enforce my belief that Asia does not actually OWN America?

A Child is Dead...Do You Really Care....?

A child is dead so what do you care? Many of you are in an uproar about the recent decision in the Casey Anthony case. You weep, moan and roar that baby Caylee is dead. But do you really care? After all, that was 3 years ago and we Americans can't concentrate on a tragedy that long (Hell, we're already over the oil spill in the gulf!!!) Are you more upset that Casey Anthony was not sent to prison of a crime you know she committed or are you honestly sharing a universal vitriol? Are you willing to bet your eternal soul on her guilt?

I’ve been around this angry world long enough to see so many humans have been sentenced to a death they did not earn. Why not go back to Jesus (Oh boy the Christians are gonna be mad at me now)!!! Have you ever read about the many crimes the people of his time accused him of? Or do you think he was nailed to a cross, pierced in his sides and left to die a slow guilty death because of a traffic ticket. Don’t worry they threw stones too.

Do you know how many kids are dying in our streets each day? 22,000 children die every day from poverty globally. How about 8% of all teens who are bullied commit suicide! For each of you who used the trial as water cooler fodder, 1 dollar a day, or $365 a year from a few hundred of you (us) would cut that number in half (given to the right charity)!

We're you upset that 1000 CAYLEE ANTHONYs die each year due to not having appropriate healthcare insurance? Yet, we “grown ups” (Republicans) are spending millions of dollars each month trying to get the current law of the land repealed because “America will crash and burn in eternal flames of poverty” if it’s not! Don’t get me started (that’s another blog article)!!!!

Ms. Anthony may be guilty. She may even do something stupid like O.J. which will land her in jail anyways. But, that’s not the focus. If you are truly outraged start transferring your anger TOMORROW by doing something about it instead of doing what we Americans are popular for doing….TALKing!

The rise of the “Man of Color" is upon us! What? ... you don’t believe me? King of Kings, Rulers of vast realms of Riches and Minerals. This ascension has been a long time coming. Why? Because of you !! You have taken so long to believe in the power that lies within you; and everyone sees it but you! While others continue to feed you poison and tear down your family by causing dissention between you and your Queen; she feels comfortable sharing with the world that you're nothing more than a DOG or a no good baby daddy. The system (jail) has offered you 3 meals and a cot for the exchange of your kingdom!

...but I know, “A change Gone come”

You’ve been stripped of your rank among the corporate dinner table. They’ve devised a way to emasculate your credit so you have no backup plan! Is it so easy to pronounce your soul mates to be bitches and hoes? You called them those pretty descriptive words so long they now answer to them!? What was once a symbol of being a right of possession in an all male world of imprisonment (wearing your pants low to show your underwear) is now what is prescribed to be SWAG….huh? Your leaders speaking on behalf of your plight have been comedians, rappers and gangsters.

But whoa to thee the rise of the Man of Color has come. All eyes point towards the Motherland, your Motherland, our Motherland….AFRICA! The world has told us that we come from jungle bunnies and flesh eaters. They say go home to your dry desert and roaming lions-tigers-bears. But, we were scared to go see for ourselves! We were hood-winked, bamboozled & run amuck, or at least some of you were. Some were not fooled. Some stood guard….flag in hand waiting for more souljahs to join them [to be awakened from the MATRIX].

Our time is now and Mother AFRICA needs all within the diaspora. Come home and protect her for she is being colonized for the last time. It is time for the “Black Man” to rule once again and all knows it but YOU! Why do you think they are so afraid of you. No one is afraid of the powerless. So, you MUST be the powerful!!!! Stop asking for leaders and role models because they are YOU. Let’s take back our families by being its KING. 7 Tips for a Real Estate junkie...!

As I’ve written in my book “How to Survive the Next 365” I have more than 17 years of Real Estate experience. Having been involved with more than $10 million of real estate transactions, I’ve constantly kept my ear to the pulse of the market. Listed below are my 7 tips for real estate in 2011, I want you (the readers) to focus on. Of course as I go around the country speaking (on those occasions I talk about real estate) I advise you to listen to those who have experience in the business. Be careful to watch who you listen to! There are those who would have you believe real estate is dead….DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE J

1. There’s still only a limited amount of land in the World. So, no matter what the Government, Wall Street & real estate experts say... supply and demand principles never lie!

2. 2. If you are liquid you are GOLD. Now is the time you can find some unbelievable retail real estate deals especially in the residential forum. I’ve seen deals up to 80% off already discounted purchase prices.

3. 3. Out with the old…in with the new! The art of “flipping” is long gone and a dead way of doing business. Although you’re able to get deals like you’ve never done before, you are going to have to exercise patience in your exit strategies. Buying and holding property will allow you to put yourself in a position of extreme wealth in the near future. In most markets 20-30K will allow you to obtain a practical 2 or 3 bedroom home with little to no rehab work. I would advise you to make the home rent ready and build yourself a positive cash flow on a monthly basis while you wait for the market to correct itself.

4. 4. For those who are a bit more risqué, try to pool your monies in order to be able to approach banks with a bulk order offer. You’ll probably need a minimum of 100,000 cash to (250,000 min would be ideal) in order to bid for a bank’s REO bundle. When purchasing these large bundle packages, you will have properties that need a ton of work and those that will be steals. Your steals will be more than enough to break even or make a profit. Hold on to your duds or sell them off at extremely low deals.

5. 5. The banking industry is still trying to find its way back into the trusting arms of the American people. On the other end, real estate has (in most markets) bottomed out. So, by purchasing property via cash deals you’re investing at an extreme low rate on future valued asset with nowhere to go but up. The almighty dollar is taking a beating so the quicker you can convert it to a valued asset the better. When it’s time to sell be sure to utilize a 1031 exchange deferred tax process (I just love this form!).

6. 6. Small multi-unit apartment complexes are a prime time investment. Although I wouldn’t recommend them for beginners, if you want true positive cash flow assets…this is your baby! Again, due to the extremely low rates & prices you can get these gems dirt cheap. There’s still a need to have a great maintenance and management crew (without them you just bought yourself a 60hr job). As a result to the market crash and high foreclosure tally, many are having to result to becoming a renter. With proper location (plus the other 2 recommendations) you should be able to keep a 70-80% occupancy rate. This should be more than enough to keep you in the black. Oh, and by the way, fully furnished rentals are making a comeback!

7. 7. Finally, I want everyone to understand that a house is only an investment when it is bought properly with the proper investment strategy. Just buying a home to live in does not make it an investment (it makes it a BILL)!? So, even if you’re simply looking for a great upgrade for you and your family be sure to think about a long or short term strategy to make you a significant profit! As many have discovered a home can become a complete nightmare which will/can have you upside down in a New York minute…

I truly hope I've empowered a many of you, tantalized others, and encouraged a few to stop listening to CNN, CNBC or Fox News and get in the game. It is time like these when millionaires are made; while others sit on the sideline waiting for the end of days (which by the way came and went). Ok..."Why Not Black Women?"

“Why Not Black Women” is a dogmatic view of the problems black men have with black women. It is primarily based on two resources (as much as I can determine). The first being the authors own personal experience and the second an extensive research from the horse’s mouth…MEN (actually over 200)! Dawn Bedingfield is a self described “part-time” author, but this report is not part time work! In this writer’s opinion…she’s out done herself.

The book addresses a very universal theme that more and more black men are dating and in some cases marrying white women. Now, I know you’ve probable read countless books and article prescribing the cause of all this raucous. But trust me; you’ll enjoy how Dawn takes herself (for the most part) out of the equation. As a man I was relieved to find this book was not another male bashing extravaganza (Lord knows there’s enough books on Amazon.com for that). This book tries to take the thoughts and opinions from men and convey them (in detail) to the hearts and minds of women of color. By the way, did you know that 50% of black women in the US are single? DAMN FOR REAL….?

As a critic, the book is short and to the point. It is well written and well edited. The 14 chapters help outline and order the path or plight men vs women go through on a daily bases. Seldom have I read a book from cover to cover in such a short time (most of the time I’m too damn bored). It is my belief that this book can and will be the perfect platform for establishing a meaningful dialog between “the black relationship”. Men…this book will help you learn why black women don’t like to trust men with their lives; it will give you some insight into where the term “Independent Woman” derived its origin from. Women, after reading this book you will either dismiss it as being overly exaggerated or…you will learn why black men feel their homes are nothing more than pt.2 of a daily battlefield that carries over from each day. Hey, but don’t trust my expert critique…LOL…buy the book and tell me I’m wrong!

Are the rats jumping off a sinking ship?

Well, well, well…it appears the recent Bishop Eddie Long voyage has some passengers jumping off the ship. Today’s announcement by late great Dr. M.L. King’s daughter Rev. Bernice King will be leaving New Birth Missionary Church has some (including me) scratching their heads.

For those who may have been in a 3^rd World Country and was unaware Bishop Eddie Long has been under the accusations of sexual misconduct by 4 young men who attended his church. Recently, the Bishop reached a $15 million settlement with his accusers in order to keep him and his church out of the courtroom and further media publicity. It was believed that Mr. Long would deny any settlement and preferred to have his day in court to clear his name. But, that came to past and a settlement was the order of the day. These proceedings leave me (and hopefully you) with a few questions? The first and most obvious is, “WHY”? I would think anyone (especially a man of the cloth speaking daily before hundreds of thousands) would need to have his name free of such vile accusations. How can a church continue to believe in their leader who simply made the issue go away with a check? Secondly, who is going to pay that $15 million bill? Lastly, who’s going to stay on this very damaging “ship” (congregation)?

We know now one prominent soldier for Christ who decided her good family name could not be associated any further with this house of cards….Rev. Bernice King! Ms. King who also served as an Elder in the church gave no “real” explanation as to why the sudden departure except that this was in the making for quite some time and that time has come (yeah right). The first of many leaders of New Birth, has decided to jump off this apparent sinking ship. Will this lead to other leaders decided enough is enough and will the King followers join her in raising a finger and waltzing down the church isle and jumping into a speeding car to get the heck out of dodge!?

By the way, if you believe the church tithes and offerings won’t be used to pay this extreme pennant off….YOU MUST BE OUT YO MIND!!! Do you really see the good Bishop withdrawing $15 million from his own personal account to take care of this problem? I read where the members of the church gave Bishop Long a rousing round of applause as he gave his 1^st sermon after his announcement of the big pay off. HUH??? I must have read that section in err. Surely, the good people of New Birth had enough self-love to, at the very least, cast a discouraging eye… well maybe not! For it has been said “broad is the road that leads to destruction and many enter it ... but narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it”…(somewhere in Matthews)

This is a pretty DAMN wide Road isn’t it…???

Who am I kidding? If Eddie Long was caught having sex with all four of those young men at one time right before Sunday morning service by every member of the church….At least half of the members would stick around 'til the benediction…***blank stare***

What's a President to do?

Not since President James K. Polk has a President set a series of agendas and went about achieving them with such reckless abandon. Most Presidents do not like to accomplish too much in their 1^st term because it leaves them very susceptible to their opponents opinions. The other party then has a tremendous amount of material to campaign against. In the case of Pres. Polk, he did not care since he promised to be a one term President and he kept his promise! Pres. Obama did not get this memo?! I realize that many of you reading this article don’t like the President (some because of his color, some because of his politics and some because the Republicans leaders said not too)!!! Yet, very few of you can say he has been lazy and refuse to tackle the tough issues.

I’m not evaluating the President on whether I love every move he’s made nor am I using this platform to win over his enemies, Is it not a shame that the POTUS has enemies in his own country (especially in an elected democratic society)? What I am going to point out is the urgency to which Pres. Obama seems to be attacking issue after issue. I’m interested in knowing why he’s so passionate in doing so? It’s certainly not to increase his possibility of a re-election bid. If that were the case he’d be resting on his laurels. Not since Nixon have I seen the other side of the isle go after the President with such vitriol (and I didn’t think Nixon deserved it either). I know we live in a cynical world and America certainly leads that cause, but once we select a leader, it is this writer’s opinion that, we’d be better suited to support him for the sake of posterity. Perhaps, it's better to have a Dictatorship where if you disagree with the leader they simply come to your house and shoot you??!!!

R&B’s newest starlette has arrived! Recently, I had the pleasure of meeting a songstress diva with real power and talent! Her name? Giselle Grayson….you may know her as the R&B Barbie!!! Here’s what I know-she’s fly, attractive, a diva, funny, can “SANG”, and owns the stage. Indie Film Maker Akil DuPont

Wow, were do i start? "Underground" a fabulous short story film directed by a name you might want to remember Mr. Akil DuPont. Written by Ariya Watty & Akil it is a slave story told through song. Featuring up and coming stars Ken Wester, Tomi Townsend & Nike Eaton, "Underground" follows a field slave who plans to escape from his oppressive plantation life after he discovers "master" is planning to sell off his young daughter.

I was pleasantly surprised after viewing this powerful journey into America's infamous past. Every aspect of movie film making was professionally covered in this film. The cinematography was well crafted, the editing was concise with the director's eye & the music was historically dramatized. Underground was produced by Allison Leger and was done as a Director School project at Florida State University (FSU film).

I know i'm tooting the proverbial horn for "Underground" but i'm not the only one. The film has won several film festival awards including:

The burning flames on the cover definitely catch the attention of the reader but may seem a slight bit cliché. If you consider the title and take in the cover, you can deduce that committing one of the seven deadly sins will result in certain hot death.

My Thoughts

In this book, Quiniece Sheppard shares with us her thoughts regarding sex, lust, masturbation, fornication, pornography, adultery, and other sexual perversions all in a single book! She also provides her readers with scriptures and an interpretation of what God instructs us to do accordingly.

Sex, and all of its related content, is often debated and discussed in many different environments. From boardroom to the church house, it is a hot topic with all sides armed with evidence to support and disprove the other. I must commend Ms. Sheppard for taking on such an intense subject matter. She takes her position very quickly and throughout her book, supports that position by providing scriptures from the bible to her readers as a reference. In order to make the reader more comfortable with the content of the book, she also bares her soul and shares her experiences that she has overcome through the years. This is the very thing that I liked most about this book! The author was not afraid of making herself vulnerable by admitting to her mistakes and sharing with us her disappointments. The importance of sharing these experiences (her testimony) is paramount in that they allow the reader to see her imperfections and share many of the same struggles. She also encourages the reader not to carry all the weight alone, but to look to a higher source for strength and guidance [GOD].

Out of the Dark Age into the Black Light!

Have you ever heard of the term Moor? Who or what was a Moor? Moors were African in origin and descendants of Berbers or Black African Arabs from Northern Africa which some say can date back to 12,000 years BC. One moor in particular I’ve been keenly interested in was General Tariq Ibn Ziyad or Jabal Tariq as he was later called.

In the year 711 A.D. General Ziyad invaded an already broken Iberian Peninsula (the now lands of Portugal & Spain). During these years Spain was going through a type of civil war and was mired (as many European countries were) in the “Dark Ages”. Just for point of reference the Dark Ages were a period of time in Europe of economic deterioration and disruption after the fall of the Roman Empire. Only taking roughly a year to conquer the entire peninsula, the Moors ruled with care. They were not oppressive and allowed the mostly Christian Spaniards to practice their religions if they wished. They also allowed them to own their lands much as had been done prior to Moor rule. What the Moors did do is provide this region of the World with higher learning, Arts & Science, Agriculture, Public Bath houses, gardens and palaces. In fact, Spain proudly became the center “mecca” for learning during these 800 years or rule. It has been argued that the Renaissance Period had its true origins in this region and many Artists, thinkers and scholars would train here only to take their knowledge back home for their own advancement.

If this be true then one must come to the understanding that divinity such as Leonardo Di Vinci, Michelangelo, Machiavelli, & Botticelli all learned and cultivated their art forms from Moors. Is it no wonder why none of our learned books in our schools ever mention the name “Moor”? Why is it that a culture could dominate for almost 1000 years die without much of a trace in our day to day teachings? How is it we are taught so much about the advancements of the Roman Empire yet absolutely nothing of the Moorish Empire? Yet even today if you were to travel to Spain or Portugal you would see clear cut evidence of a people that were lost yet not forgotten. Finally, let us not forget our dear brother Ibn Ziyad heroics in this tale. He fought with such efficiency that the Britain territory Gibraltar is known as Jabal Tariq (meaning Mountain of Tariq) 'til this day! Out of such darkness came such brilliant light from a dark skinned people….long live the “MOOR”

Why is it en vogue to be DUMB!??

I was recently at a conference where a good friend of mine was speaking on a controversial subject. During his platform he raised a powerful question (which spurned this diatribe) “Why is it “Cool” for folks to be DUMB?! Where in the hell did that concept come from? Was it created by our leaders and generational thinkers or was it interjected into our communities by the forces in “real power”?

40 years ago it was en vogue to be intellectual and revolutionary. People like Dr. Julianne Malveaux, Cornell West, James Hal Cone, Henry Louis Gates & Toni Morrison were but a few in a land of many. They were part of the “norm” of idealist who were dead set on a higher learning of “self”. All of these individuals were well read, could write and blended in with the landscape of mainstream Black America as it was called. Because of this kind of regularity many of us (50’s and 60’s kids) grew up feeling it was our duty to carry the torch! On the “tele” were programs and commercials that encouraged reading (remember “Reading is Fundamental?). How about the book mobile that came around or low rent neighborhoods? I especially remember PBS programs like “School House Rock”!!!

But so much has changed…L

Now, as I travel around our beloved Nation and speak with High School students and Collegiate students most only seem to read what absolutely necessary to pass a class. The only recreational reading is the back of CD covers or gossip magazines (WTF?!!). Why, because if you get caught reading you will become completely ostracized from the “hip” crowd. In other words…”You’ll lose you SWAG”!! Hey, it’s not entirely their fault, mainstream TV and radio places value in “Dumbness”! The music industry practically begs them to be dumb. No more are there the fantastic lyrics of Curtis Blow, TuPac or KRS1. If you ain’t hustling and trying to get YOURS at all costs (YOU ARE SOFT). JayZ and Russell Simmons are fighting a losing cause but at least they are showing would be thinkers a proper blue print for survival. Russell has 2 powerful books “Do You” and “Super Rich”. JayZ is predicted to be among the giants in total wealth very soon! Yet, when I ask folks if they have bought or read one of Mr. Simmons’s books; they, look at me crossed eyed and reply, “who that guy who loves the chickens?”

So, what are the solutions? Here’s where I need your help. I have my beliefs as have so many before me but I want you to leave me a note below and tell me what YOU think we can or should do! Know this, we have not one moment of time to waste. As brother Ed Gordon recently pronounced on his show (on BET Sundays at 12PM) “because of our non involvement in the global economy, we have become a throw-a-way people”. We who were once King of Kings, masters of arts and sciences, physical and mental beings, now relegated to “A THROW A WAY PEOPLE”!

There is much discourse in the political air about the same issues that were discussed in the 1800's. Conservatives seem to have the ear of our citizens by shouting “LOOK, LOOK what those barbaric Big Government Liberals have done!” “We must save America from this God awful deficit”. Strangely enough, they’ve said this message so much many folks have forgotten that it was on their 8 year watch that this road to Asian debt was conceived. Ah, but that is the way of the people. We are a fickle bunch! What ever they say we believe…. We are like sheep being tended to by the Millionaires in D.C.

Does anyone remember what a “trust” used to be defined as? It was when a single person or corporation owned and controlled an industry. Perhaps you remember names like: J.P. Morgan, Dale Carnegie, John D. Rockerfeller or James B. Duke? No? What about Microsoft, B.P. Oil, or Comcast? In the early 1900’s our beloved “Teddy Roosevelt” declared War against these so called trusts! I’ve read that the Pres. Found an ally with the people who had been weary of Big Government solutions, but was now more receptive. Why do you think the “people” began siding with the Pres. After just electing a Republican Congress and Pres.?

Here’s my take…although they had been told that Government was evil they began to see that the real evil comes from Corporations who by design have too much power over the “people”. Does anyone remember “Goldman Sachs”? I didn’t think so! We are too busy blaming a President and his administration for the decline of our future. Wake up America! There’s no way the true powers that be would ever allow “the 1^st minority President” enough power to collapse the country... But, they would allow him to take the fall.

Here’s what we should be focused on:

Why have we allowed “trusts” to be reformed and control our lives? Wasn’t that determined to be unconstitutional???
Who really controls this country? If you think it’s the President, you need to be shipped to Moscow…TODAY!
How in the Hell can 1% of the people control 99% and the 99% be "ok" with it!?
Why after saying PUBLICLY that there’s no reason to give them additional tax breaks, do we still fight to do just that! (I’m speaking about the top 10% income earners. If you don’t believe me “youtube” Bill Gates, Warren Buffett or your local millionaire!) By the way they have ways of not paying taxes at all if they choose to…WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!
Are you going to choose the “red” pill or the “blue” pill? (let me guess?)

Teddy is not coming back to save us! He’s dead! Our politics in D.C. have become a very high classed Dog and pony show. They are keeping us distracted with Washington Politics and taking the focus away from the aspects that really do affect our lives (Local Government). How many of us know our state congressmen, county commissioners or school board? These folks have much more power over our day to day then Sarah Palin, Paul Ryan or Nancy Pelosi!

Silver Rights Movement: Lest not we Forget

It was one of Dr. Martin L. King’s last dreams to have his people and the country move from Civil Rights to “Silver Rights”. This seems like the most opportune time to remind us where the 60’s were supposed to take us. Civil rights guaranteed every man/woman would be judge by the content of their character not by the color of ones skin. There has been much headway made in that regards. We now have a President of the United States as proof.

However, not much has been done in regards to Silver Rights….the advancement of our thoughts, economic rise and power within the minority communities (especially African-American)! No longer will we be just the fish that get to swim in the sea, we will strive to own the sea we swim in.

The quickest way for our communities to be granted a seat at the table is to own & control 100% of an industry (ANY INDUSTRY)! There is much we have left behind and there are many of opportunities we have let slip through our grasping hands. Take for instance, African-American hair care and weave industry. Here’s an industry we are 100% consumers yet we own less than 1% of the industry. How can this be? What other race would dare let another control a product industry that hinges on their dollar to survive. Yet, here we are satisfied with just being consumers…thinking there’s nothing we can do? What has happened to us since the vaunted 1960’s? Do we not remember that during the Jim Crow era Durham, Wilmington, Tulsa & Atlanta were thriving communities? Durham was titled “Black Wall Street”! Why were these colored men/women able to create so much even with the tight hand of America clasping at their liberty.

That’s brings us to 2011, Jan. 17 the nationally celebrated birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He would have been 82 years old on January 15th. I wonder if Dr. King would have recognized this Black America. I wonder if he would have appreciated the culture, our rap music, “Pants on the Ground” or our lack of community caring. I know Dr. King would be saddened by our lack of movement towards the “Silver Rights” project? What say ye?

There is still hope. Industry leaders like Oprah, Bob Johnson, Tiger woods, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson & Don Peebles Quintin Primo III are writing blue prints for us to follow. But, what will it take to follow those footsteps? Courage, insight, faith, intellect, education, love, gratitude are the tools we must begin to master. All of us not just some!

We have to stop focusing on cars, a stunning wardrobe, rims, the lottery & pawning our ancestral heritage.

I proudly stand up and salute each and every one of my brothers and sisters who are making “a change”, who “dare to hope” & who march towards our “Silver Rights”….

"Gatwick" Airport...under New Management!!

Normally, this would have been front page news for several months but ….I caught a glimpse of it on the CNN ticker? The UK’s second largest airport “Gatwick Airport” was purchased by Nigerian businessman Adebayo Ogunlesi! That’s probably why you haven’t heard of this powerful transaction….a Nigerian? Owning the second busiest airport in the entire UK? Who is Adebayo Ogunlesi? Well to be honest with you, prior to now I had no idea. As I researched, I discovered this acquisition was no accident…it was his destiny!

Bayo (as he’s called by his close friends) was educated 1^st at the prestigious Kings College in Nigeria, then at Oxford and finally he attended Harvard Law & Business where he graduated with honors from each. Mr. Ogunlesi was the 1^st of two Editors of African descent (the other was W. Randy Eaddy a Sr. Partner at Kilpatrick & Stockton, LLP) to serve on the Harvard Law Review. In many ways he was a trailblazer for our 44^th President Barack Obama! In his early days he served as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall (by the way he was the 1^st non American to clerk for the high Court).

So, at age 56 Mr. Adebayo Ogunlesi positioned his company “Global Infrastructure Partners of NYC” (GIP) to purchase Gatwick Airport for 1.455 Billion British Pound Sterling (that approximately $2.25 Billion). I just love stories like this that get buried in most prime time media outlets or they become mere footnotes! Can you imagine the CNN, MSNBC and Fox chatter if say….Warren Buffett were to purchase this airport? (well maybe not Fox?!). At any rate, that’s why I’m here. Oh and to prove my point (mostly to myself), I called 10 friends randomly just to see if they knew of this business transaction….only 2 had heard of it and one of them was from Nigeria! LOL

This certainly beats buying rims on cars, owning clubs, having 5 cars parked in front of our apartment, or spending $1000 a month of weave (sad face). Hats off to Mr. Ogunlesi....job well done and I want to be like you when I grow up! Thanks for giving us an example "we" can see ourselves aspiring to. Thanks for raising the bar!

The American Marketing Association defines a brand as a "name, term, sign, symbol or design intended to identify the goods and services you provide to the market place. Your "Brand" in many cases determines the level of success you will have with your company or product. Who creates your brand becomes the "father" of your BRAND. If you believe these 2 sentences then you must find a creator for your brand who can create what will drive your business. A great graphic artist can draw what you envisioned by listening to the little clues you impart. Sheldon Sneed of Sheldon Sneed Designs personifies living art (by using his creative mind). He is an innovator who consistently builds logos, and ads designed to move your business into the 21st Century.

Recently, I sat down with Mr. Sneed to find out what makes him unique in this crowded world of designers. Read a portion of what we talked about during our interview below...

1. we've been friends for a little over a quarter of a Century Sheldon, however this may be the 1st time our readers have heard of you. Can you tell them who you are?

A: I was born an artist. Ask my mom. She taught me to draw when I was a kid and I ended up taking that skill + a high-imaginative right-brain and making it a career.

2. There are so many good Graphic Artist out there, what makes you and your work unique?

A: It's original. There's a lot of GAs out there like you mention and "we" copy a lot of styles from each other. The thing that sets me apart is adding my own little "twist" design. Sometimes it just using the right colors to capture a "feeling" of design and sometimes it's just flat-out composition. Sometimes, I even hide designs WITHIN designs. LOL!

3. In business how important is it to have the best Graphic works to stay ahead of the herd?

A: My tagline is a very old saying, "Image is everything" I use it because it still rings true.
Every business should operate in the sense that you're going to be seen by thousands or millions of eyeballs every day. AND the first thing they see is your IMAGE. If your image is "low-end," they will view you as low-end. On the other hand, if it's "tight" and impressive, you can have TWO people on your staff but they will think your office is in a downtown high-rise. THAT'S how important your image (marketing materials) is.

4. What area should business owners focus on first if they are limited in the amount of money they can spend?

A: You HAVE to start with your Branding/Logo. That's very key. For instance, how many times have you passed a restaurant or business and didn't like logo on the sign out front? Did you stop?
Your BRAND is the first thing people see. Again, if it's poor quality or "hook-boogie," people will assume you are, too.

5. What should a Good logo Say to the open market?

A: People should "get" what your business is about in two seconds. They shouldn't have to guess. Whether you're using just typography or a symbol of sorts, people need to get it from the jump. That way, they can make an informed decision on using your business...or not.

6. You work for a Newspaper that's owned by a large company. Where do you see the state of the American News Paper?

A: Newspaper are taking a HUGE hit, right now. Mainly because the economy is down and back on a very slow rise. The other factor is the internet. "Papers" have not figured out, jointly, how to make the type money off their web sites like they USED to in print. That window has actually closed. However, for those who think that newspapers will die all together, guess again.
The internet has gathered a huge amount of bloggers and writers but their SOURCES come from...newspapers — with REAL journalists who know how to gather and confirm sources legitimately and ethically.

7. What's up new for Sheldon Sneed in 2011?

A: Expanding the business. In this economy you have to have more than "PLAN A." I've got "A-F." LOL! Participating in forums, like this, also helps. Thanks Klarque!

The First Great Woman in History

Queen Hatshepsut ruled Egypt 1500 years before Christ was born in the Eighteenth Dynasty. I was just introduced to this all powerful woman and although she was certainly not the 1^st female ruler of Antiquity she was the most influential and Noble. She ruled with a firm but sensible hand for more than 20 years. Hatshepsut was unique as she challenged the supremacy of the male. During her times there was not even a word for “queen” or “empress”. She was the daughter of Thotmes I who was the conqueror of the known world but was stricken with Paralysis. She even had a prime minister “Nehusi” (which in Egyptian means “full blooded Negro”) that was positioned as second in command.

This great woman had built the first awe inspiring temple (Deir-el-Bahari) and Obelisks just to hail triumph over her detractors. She ruled over a time of great wealth and prosperity. Gold was so plentiful it was no longer weighed but measured by the bushel baskets. Hatshepsut controlled Egypt by announcing to all that she was really a “man”….to this no one disputed. Eventually through a nefarious act, she was most likely killed by her husband/half brother Thotmes III. Once out of the way (in an act of resentment) Thotmes had all traces of her removed from plain sight. So effective was he that she was forgotten for over 300 years. Nevertheless she was the only woman ruler buried in the Valley Of Kings.

What I love about this story is that it shows the power of women to fight oppression and male dominance. A woman of color was effectively the ruler of the then known civilized world. Her roots were from southern Egypt which was and still is very much mixed with the pure Negroes of the Sudan. So, the next time you see an African-American woman demeaning herself by not portraying the dignity of a Queen, remind her that she is a descendent of Hatshepsut’s rule…

Tax Cut Extensions...Good or Bad?

Wow, look at all the “Obamanites” jump off the boat! And for what? TAX CUT EXTENTIONS…for everyone!!! You heard me correct tax cuts not tax increases! Pres. Obama is in the fight of his life battling the GOP in a “lame duck” Congress (which is fruitless anyways). He’s placed in a terrible position because his Party just about lost every seat in Congress, yet he’s tasked with still defeating a very strong and united Republican Party. As we speak Mr. Pres. is negotiating the details of a framework agreement to extend the Bush Tax Cuts from the early 2000’s. It seems he must have reverse Roe vs Wade?! The Democrats, Pundits and just about everyone I know (on the left) are just about ready to make V.P. Biden the Pres.

Here’s one good ole boy’s opinion. None of us (and I do mean none) are as smart, insightful and strategic as Mr. Barack Hussein Obama. If you believe you are, I highly recommend you place your name in the hat for the 2012 elections because we surely need you!!! So, I suggest we all take a step back and allow the Pres. That was elected to do what he knows he must do. Let him finish the painting before we start saying “that doesn’t look like me”? I’m just glad someone is doing what’s best for us instead of what could get them brownie points for the upcoming election. Did anyone catch all the bologna rhetoric those Congressman were saying in order to get elected?!!

There’s no doubt in many folks minds that the Bush tax cuts for the rich are unjust. Yet, if they were not extended millions of Americans would have been minimized at a time when an extra $1000.00 could be the difference between barely making it and “HOMELESS”. It’s funny because many of you don’t even know what tax bracket you’re in anyways?! Let’s do some research shall we?

Bush Tax Cuts (circa 2001)

Everyone knows that Pres. Bush was a serial tax cutter. He helped establish 2 major tax bills that all had a sunset provision in them (they had a termination date).

1. E Economic Growth & Tax Relief Reconciliation Act

2. J Jobs & Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act

They cut taxes for earned income, long-term capital gains and dividends. They also expanded child tax credits, got rid of the marriage penalty and other changes to the tax code. Not that bad huh? The only problem most Dems have is that the underlined benefits are mostly for the “rich”. But hey isn’t everything in America?

Tax Brackets

The EGTRRA created 6 tax brackets: 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, & 35% based on income (If the extensions where to be canceled, we would revert back to the pre-2001 rates). The 10% would go away and everyone would jump up to 15% who is under $34,550. Then you would have…28%, 31%, 36% & 39.6%. EGAD!!

The $1000.00 per child tax credit would drop back down to $500.00. Currently, marriage couples can file together and receive deductions twice that of a single person (kiss that goodbye)!

Now, by agreeing to this compromise Pres. Obama secured 13 more months of unemployment benefits (which don’t seem like much unless it’s you that’s on unemployment). Currently there are more than 6 million folks who would be eligible for this assistance. Many have said we can’t continue to help people who are in need. To this I say first, we have no problem financing two… billion dollar wars; and second, if we still have 6 million Americans out of work in 2 years the last thing Pres. Obama will have to worry about will be Tax Extensions!!! There are also a few more compromises to this new extension….small business tax credits more we probably haven’t even heard about yet. Hell, of course it would have been great to kill the Tax Credits to the “Rich” (unless you are rich), but that’s not going to happen folks.

Who do you think controls America? Who do you think elects Presidents and Congressmen? If you’re so damn mad about the current state of things stop voting based on talking points and TV sound bites. The GOP is strong because they do a lot more than talk! They write their congressmen, they show up for rallies, they are united in a single goal and they fight! Remember this…everyone (even the Pres.) in Congress is “Rich”….why do you think you have a fair representation in Washington anyways?!

If you haven’t heard by now….there’s a new movement coming! That movement is SK Dixon!!! Beginning with a mere daydream, during class at FAMU, in the spring of 1996, a photographer was conceived. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting SK back in our collegiate days and during our stint in the world famous Marching “100” (shouts out to my brothers!). Mr. Dixon has always had a camera draped around his neck and through years of dedication and determination he’s honed his craft to something I’ve not seen before! Now in the metro Atlanta area he has brought a refreshing viewpoint to photography. Recently, I had the chance to sit down with this amazing mind and query information about what makes him unique….ENJOY!!!

My William M. Raines

In 1965, more than ten years after the historic Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka (1954) decision intergration of the Public schools in Duval County had barely begun. Duval County largest high school (No. 165) opened in the Moncrief area of Jacksonville on January 25, 1965. The opening of the school brought about the reassignment of 1,305 black high school students in grades nine through twelve from Northwestern Junior-Senior High School to the new school. The 2000 student capacity high school was a $2 million project and duplicated the new Fletcher High School in the Beaches community. The school opened unnamed and was referred to simply as School No. 165.

Dr. Andrew A. Robinson was appointed principal of the new school. Robinson, a 35 year old African-American and Jacksonville native, held a Bachelor of Science degree from FAMU and a doctorate in education from Columbia U. One of the early black students at Raines, Darryl Wilson, linked Dr. Robinson and his “Ichiban” philosophy as he said:

It is sort of a saying [Ichiban]! There are expectations of things you can do as an individual and in society. You are a representative of society (From picking up a sheet of paper to putting your shirt tail in). The characteristics…if you are going to be number one. You have to behave like Ichiban!

In June of 1965, the school board adopted the name William M. Raines High School for the new school. William M. Raines was a prominent black educator who served as principal of Matthew Gilbert High School in Jacksonville from 1938 until his death in 1950. The students selected the Viking as their mascot and their colors red and grey. They also adopted the motto “Knowledge is Power” and so now School No. 165 had an identity of its own..

It is my opinion that this is one of the most courageous Novels of 2010 (and boy I’ve read a lot of them!). Deadbeat Friend: Learn how to Prune Your Tree

Just as a tree sheds it’s dying (no longer useful) leaves, so should we with regards to those who occupy space in our inner circle. Of course, it sounds easy! The fact remains most of us can not do it! Can you guess why? GUILT! We feel a sense of loyalty, we are scared to hurt someone’s feelings or we are deceived with a person’s value. Learn from Mother Nature…when a part of you becomes dormant or destructive cut it off! Your inner circle, circle of sameness, associates and friends help mold who you are and who you are to become. You may have heard “your income level mimics those you surround yourself with”? I opine 5 years from now you will become who you associate yourself with in every facet of your life. This includes your spirituality, eating habits, entertainment, parenting, social tendencies, etc...

Here’s what I’d like you to consider. Many of your current friends/associates/business partners are dead weight. They are not only holding you back, but you are enabling them. Some absolutely mean you harm and will destroy you in the end! Are they truly your friends? In the book “The 48 laws of Power” Robert Greene warns with the 2nd law “Never put too much trust in your Friends” (read the book for a clearer understanding). No, I’m not advocating you excommunicate your friends and family. However, many of us who find ourselves mired with little positive movement need to clean up our circle “Today”. This may very well be the most difficult thing you’ve had to do. But it will be the most worth while…

Exercise:

Take a piece of unlined paper. Now draw a medium sized circle in the middle of the page. This represents you as the Sun of your Universe. Draw several smaller circles that surround “you” at various distances. Place names inside the circles that represent those most dear to you (either socially or business). Once you’re done walk away and give yourself about 30 minutes. When you come back look at each “moon” (circle) and on a separate sheet write what they bring to your life.

1. Do they inspire you to be a better you?
2. Do they make you happy when they are around you…?
3. Can they be counted on in a battle?
4. Do they make you feel guilty?
5. Do you hate when they call?
6. Could you borrow money in a pinch?
7. Do they only come around on Holidays?
8. Do they tell you the truth?

The answers to questions like these should help you determine whether or not they belong in your circle of Life or if they are a dead leaf on your tree.

Lastly, people are in our lives for a “Reason, Season, or Lifetime. Make sure you’re not keeping them around longer for the wrong reason…

Heaven Just Got a Bit more Crowded

A son’s love for his mother is boundless. She is the person who heals his wounds both physical and mental. She is his provider and confidant. She is his first example of what a woman should and can be.

On Oct.4^th I lost my mom. Wow, I can’t believe it..? Just typing that last sentence on this document seems alien to me…a lie! My mom was my biggest cheerleader of the account that one day I might become somebody. She knew I was not perfect, but she loved me anyway.

I spoke to a dear friend today and she shared with me a thought (you see she lost her mother many years ago)…She said to me “In the past, you might speak to your mom via phone and think about her for a moment. You might not think about her for days afterwards, even weeks (because of course…mom is always there). Now, that you’ve lost her…not another day will pass without you thinking about her always…

What a cruel lesson to learn and what a terrible way to learn it. I would give anything to be able to hear my mother’s voice again or listen to her mess up folk’s names. I loved how when my friends came around she would make them feel comfortable. You see if you were considered a friend of mine…you were a friend of hers. My mom would sit down and share the same 4 stories about me growing up with everyone she met. I miss my mommy! I would give anything to hug her one last time…but time owes me nothing.

One week she was fussing about going to work, the next I’m calling her 91 year old mother to tell her that her only child is gone…

But in the end, I was there. My mother gave me my final lesson. You see I sometimes shun responsibility when it’s tough. I had a dreadful fear of death. I should have known my mother was saving my greatest lesson for last. I held her hand and whispered in her ear over and over “I love you mommy…I love you” as I watched her heart beat go still on the monitor...

Lesson learned...

I will never forget you and I will make you proud. I promise to carry your memories forward by raising your grandchildren to be God fearing, respectable mini versions of you. I promise to take whatever time I have remaining on Earth and not waste one second doing something I hate doing! It’s the least I can do for a mother who gave up EVERYTHING to raise a curly headed skinny boy from Jacksonville by way of L.A.

Many of you know what I mean and empathise with my plight. To those who do…I respect the fact that you can even get up in the morning. Many of you still have your mothers, alive and well. To you I say….”Do not waste a second of her remaining life not letting her know how much you love and appreciate her. Don’t wait for “Mother’s Day”. Once she's gone (and God will call her home someday) you’ll not have that chance anymore and a part of you will be missing…..forever!

If there is a Heaven (and I’m sure it is) mom is up there looking for the Bingo Hall, knowing no strangers and telling those same 4 stories about her boy!!!

Mr. Pryor (Trombonist) was tutored at the prestigious Berkley College of Music in Boston, MA while Mr. Render (Trumpeter) honed his craft at both FAMU & Delaware State (I’m proud to say Mr. Render and I were drum majors at FAMU together)! The PR Experience is a smooth blend of Jazz funk and NEO Soul. After a chance meeting, these two decided to form a duet and take the world by storm!

Here’s a fantastic story I viewed on ESPN awhile back about an amazing athlete most of us old fogies have never heard. One of the contributors on the program asked his colleagues a very usual question (at least among most sports fanatics). Who is the most dominant athlete in his or her sport? The usual suspects were voiced: Kobe, Tiger, Brady, Manny! Notice this list is a host of one named heroes. Would it surprise you to hear ‘Bubba’ as the answer? I sure as heck was…

James ‘Bubba’ Stewart is a living legend in motor cross racing…and he’s an African-American. James Jr. comes from very humble beginnings. Growing up in Florida, his parents were of meager means to say the least. Yet his father introduced him to the sport the day he was brought home from the hospital. James Sr. says he road around on his sports cycle, one hand on the handle bars the other on his newborn son (how did he pull that off!?). ‘Bubba’ began his amateur racing at the tender age of 4 years old and went on to dominate the previously all white sport. Turning pro in 2002 he quickly rose to become the face of Motor Cross Racing. In 2008, he won every race that season in the outdoor Nationals for a perfect season!

As I am listening to this remarkable story I was thinking of the terrible obstacles Bubba and his father must have gone through. How in the heck did his dad afford the bikes or entry fees during the beginning? With no other African-Americans anywhere how did he feel empowered? The normal comparison is to Tiger Woods. However unbelievable Tiger’s rise to power was, there still were other African-Americans who have paved the way (John Shippen and Lee Elder to name a few). This can not be said of James Stewart Jr.

The Stewarts did indeed face a more than fair amount of racial confrontations. The elder Stewart from one of his accounts said he was once told by an official “We don’t race ‘N’ here!” James Sr. simply replied “That’s great because we came here to race motor bikes”. Bubba faced constant racial slurs while flying around the track but never once did it damper his desire to be the best in “HIS” sport.

The most dominant athlete in the world is a 26year old African-American, and his name is not Tiger….It’s Bubba. Now you too, know him…

365 Introduces to our readers celebrity photographer Calvin Evans of Exclusive photography. Last week, Calvin Evans was a guest on “The Conversation”. We managed to catch up with Calvin on the set of a photo shoot with two amazing models from Zimbabwe.

Mr. Evans began his love affair with the camera while shooting for his high school year book. After a few key people observed his work and natural eye it was suggested he take a serious look at making a living in the field of photography. The art of photography runs through Calvin’s veins. His father was a crime scene photographer for many years. While hanging out in dark rooms as a youth, Calvin was able to see the magic of film processing, developing come to life!

Derek Blanks, Tshombe Roberts, Drexina Nelson, Leo Marshall, Tim Barrett and the legendary Gordon Parks all have served as mentors in building character, desire and perseverance. They taught him that life is a long and difficult journey and you have to make things happen by staying focused on your goals. You should always strive to continue learning and placing value into your craft.

Dr. William P. Foster the living legend who orchestrated the creation of the Florida A & M Marching “100” (arguably the world's most famous marching band). Today celebrates Dr. Foster’s 91^st birthday. Dr. Foster was born Aug. 25, 1919 in Kansas City, KS. It was in 1946 that “the Maestro” arrived at what was then Florida A & M College for Negroes and devised new techniques that would be the mainstay for marching bands forever. However, this is the world’s viewpoint of “Doc” (as his students affectionately call him).

To me he was much more!

I first met “Doc” in the fall of 1984 as a 17 year old "green" teenager with hopes of wearing that “100” emblem one day! My first impression was... this man clearly is of royalty and what a blessing it is to have him as “my” band director. He spoke in a diction that I’ve never heard a man speak before (Yes Doc was known for spouting words no one but perhaps Dr. White knew). But, it showed me the effectiveness of building one’s vocabulary and how men (of all walks & color) respected you when you mastered the King’s English. Doc Foster was almost God-like to a freshman entering those hallowed halls of the Foster/Tanner music building.

You know, I can still remember the first time “Doc” called on me by name! “What, Doc knew my name” was the only thing I could come up with. Foster knew the names of ever student that came through the “100”and he could tell you much about who you were as a musician and a person. He cared for his students much like a proud father would. Those of my fellow bandsmen who knew Doc will share my sentiments when I say…I loved him like a father!

The world knows him as a Hall of Fame Band Director and Artist! You may have heard of him once or twice mentioned at a Society Gala or as a Key note Speaker. Some bandsmen may know him as “that other band’s Director" who walked like a gallant gentleman. He is known for creating band pageantry. His band represented the US in the Bastille Day parade in Paris.

I will simply know him as….”The Law”

Our President~ The Muslim

Don’t look at me like that! I heard it from a reputable source. The other day Franklin Graham (son of evangelist Billy Graham) informed the Nation once and for all, the President Barack Hussein Obama is indeed….A Muslim! I knew it all along! He might have fooled the state of Hawaii, Harvard, Congress and the American People but he darn sure did not fool Franklin Graham! Mr. Graham informed CNN that the facts are Mr. Obama was born the son of a Kenyan Father.

So, (for the folks that are keeping score) whatever RELIGION your father is at the time of your birth will ultimately determine your faith as an adult! Got that? I’m still amazed that a Christian Minister proclaims to be an expert of the Muslim faith! Wait a minute…who the H#%$ is Franklin Graham anyway!!!?

At any rate, Mr. Graham is on record for saying Islam is a most “Wicked” religion full of Hate! I’d love to ask him are we Christians diabolical due to the “8” crusades Christians launched primarily over land, spices and gold ( I know,I know it was to get back the Holy Grail!) The deeds of a few do not condemn the morality of the masses. I do not (for one moment) condone the terrible injustices done by a few zealots in the name of Allah. I do, however, have a problem with the Republican Party trying to make Pres. Obama into a symbol of Muslim corruption all in order to win an election! The man says he is a Christian…So…He is a Christian! Who are we to say he is not!?

AND

What difference does it make if he was? I was under the impression that the founding fathers created America with the intent to have religious freedoms? So, if he was Muslim would he be ineligible for the top office? I looked everywhere in the Constitution and I don’t see any reference to a person’s religious beliefs as a qualification for that office. (Now, back to Obama’s dad) Mr. Graham declared that Obama is Muslim simply because his dad was muslim and that Islam passes to a child from their father? Just for the record. To become a Muslim one need only…

Utter the words “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah,” which loosely translated means “There is no true god (deity) but God (Allah),¹and Muhammad is the Messenger (Prophet) of God.” And:

n Believe that the Holy Quran is the literal word of God, revealed by Him.

n Believe that the Day of Judgment (the Day of Resurrection) is true and will come, as God promised in the Quran.

n Accept Islam as his or her religion.

n Not worship anything nor anyone except God.

So, any one of us can become a Muslim today! You ready? Now, unless someone has Pres. Obama on tape uttering these words and professing Muhammad as the one true messenger of God…stop with the madness…Please!!! I ask you, have you ever heard of a Muslim scared to tell you he is a Muslim? I haven’t!

But if Franklin Graham says he’s a Muslim…then he’s a Muslim! What do I know?

"Paid Forward"!!!

A month ago Survive 365 sent out a National event on facebook and titled it “Pay it Forward Day” (based loosely from the Hit Movie with the same name). The purpose was to have this one day where a group of people would collectively focus on doing a positive selfless deed for some unsuspecting person.

The good news was, we had over 400 people around the United States who committed to the collective day of giving!!!

The bad news was some people just did not get it!

To my surprise….I got a few push backs from several people!?? Comments ranged from “I don’t need to participate because everyday is Pay it Forward Day for me"…to "I would participate but I’ll be at work that day!??" HUH????

Who? ...in their right mind could say that they focus everyday on giving to others without expecting something back….(now let’s see…Mother Theresa & Jesus) but both of them are no longer with us (figuratively speaking of course!). Obviously, the point was totally missed!!!! If the American Cancer Society sponsored a walk for Cancer, it does not imply that this is the only day they give a damn about finding a cure for Cancer. It’s just one day out of “365” (no pun intended) where a group of supporters show up and represent! Oh and by the way…can you not do a good deed for someone at work? God knows they probably needed it!

Ok here’s the best one yet…Someone argued that they don’t need to spotlight their good deeds. If that person would have taken just a moment to read the description for the cause they would have noted that Absolutely No One was to post their “Pay It Forward”…reading is still fundamental! :-)

However (back to the positive), it was so wonderful knowing there were over 400 people around the states(27 states represented) that received a gift of giving and perhaps they now may have enough hope to carry on. The point of the event was due to all the cynicism in the world that there’s no one left who cares. We wanted to get people back focused on others instead of “self”. Of course we are in an economic recession. Anytime you look on T.V. to see 30,000 people standing in 100 degree weather just to snatch an application from police like its water in Haiti after the Earthquake, you’ve got a problem. If you’re wondering... this happened in East Point, Ga. just this week. However, if you view the footage it appeared that they were in a third world country. (Just to get on a 'waiting list' for subsidized housing.)

Lastly, I read a wonderful story that garners repeating. A woman in New York gave a homeless man her credit card after the man asked for change. The woman (a corp. exec) wanted to “Pay It Forward” and did what most of us wouldn’t do if our lives depended on it. She gave him her American Express Card. The homeless man took the card, bought a few things (totaling only $25.00) and brought her the card back to her where she was having lunch in the local cafe! Wow, that just helped restore my faith in mankind and who knows, like the movie "The Seventh Sign," God may have granted us another millennium of existence!

The APEX Museum Experience!

Have you been to the African-American Panoramic Experience (APEX) Museum? If not, I highly recommend you plan a family outing and scurry on down to 135 Auburn Ave. Atlanta, Ga. 30303 in historic downtown Atlanta!

APEX Museum is the creation of Mr. Dan Moore, Sr. In 1978 Mr. Moore (while attending a much overdue appreciation banquet) envisioned a museum that would highlight the accomplishments of African-American whose accomplishments were not generally widely known. In a nutshell…if you want a snapshot of the African-American experience in America and their (or in this case…our) notable accomplishments this is the place to visit (It is the only one of it’s kind in Atlanta).

My first experience to the APEX Museum was in January 2007 and to put in plainly…I was blown away! To see all of the amazing patents we as a race created over the past 200 years (or so) that are the mainstay of society now was a powerful reminder of our excellence! It gives you an appreciation of what it must have taken to create these inventions under the social vices of their times.

Below, is a brief interview with Dan Moore, Sr. and D.K. Garrison (Survive365: Your 360) at the APEX Museum…

Dan Moore, Sr., besides being a film maker, producer & curator, has authored several books. Recently, Mr. Moore has released In Search of a Match: Black & White and Sickle Cell Disease 100 Years Later. [Each of these books deal with a very genetic disease where a person’s red blood cells form abnormal shapes]. People who have the disease face a lifetime of “crisis” attacks that last 5-7 days (on average). It is a very debilitating disease where a person’s life expectancy is drastically decreased.

Mr. Moore had dedicated many years to finding relief for carriers and has a non-profit organization “Marrow for Life” (www.marrowforlife.org) who’s primary focus is to bring awareness and enroll more African-American’s to the National Bone Marrow registry. Can you believe of the more than 7 million people registered, only about 8% are African-Americans? A bone marrow transplant is ethnic based. Can you imagine how many African-Americans die annually because a donor can not be found? I encourage you to visit marrow for life and read up on how you can make a difference in saving someone’s life.

...Nigger What???

The year is 2010…the word is “Nigger”! Racism has been around since the beginning of time! In olden age, it was a by product of territorial boundaries. In more modern times it simply is caused by the “color of ones skin”. The word “nigger” has its roots some 400 years ago in North America during the colonization of English America circa 1600. The word was based as a descendant of the Latin root word “niger” meaning the color black. Some historians credit the usage of the word to John Rolfe (of Pocahontas fame) describing African slaves who were brought to the Americas (although the word was negars). Ironically, the word was not used in a negative connotation. It was more of a word to describe the color of an African.

By the mid 1800’s the word became a pejorative especially in the south. Being called a negro was a term applied to remind former slaves that they were second class citizens. The word took another morph during the civil rights movement and “nigger” was born! This time it had become a weapon! Used primarily to cut through the psyche of negroes in the south. It has been almost 400 years since the creation of this hate filled word and during that time African have been freed through a terrible war, liberated during civil unrest and assimilated during the corporate American evolution. Yet, we still have not gotten past this affliction…

Over the past 40 years African-Americans have tried in vain to convert the name to a term of endearment using “nigga”. Although, it has now become mainstream in its acceptance it has only served to keep the word alive. Even politics has had its turn. The ever popular “N-word” used as a euphemism was made popular during the O.J. Simpson trial of 1995. It has only served as a tolerated form of the word in the press. By simply inserting “n-word” any writer can effectively say “nigger”!?

By no means is “nigger” the only racial pejorative….Macaca, pikey gringo, jap, & kike have all been used in our history to illuminate a cultural bias against one or more of our fellow human beings. Yet eventually their potent power has been diminished or vanished completely. Why then is the word “nigger” much like the cockroach? Impossible to illuminate? Below are a few questions I’d like for you to ask yourself…

When was the 1^st time you heard the word “nigger”?

Have you ever used the word to describe someone?

After reading this blog…will you continue to use it?

Can you imagine your child calling someone or being called “nigger”?

Does it offend you to even have to read the word here in this blog?

Do you believe racism still exist or are we all just too sensitive?

African-Americans vs Africans...a racial divide?

We have the same heritage, skin color and prejudices against us, yet for some reason there is a “racial” divide between us! I’m talking about African vs African-American stereotypical blocks.

Where did it come from?

Do African- Americans believe we are so removed from Africa that the Africans who come to the US are minorities to us?

Why do Africans who live in America rarely have African-American friends outside of business?

I am very fortunate to have a close friend and mentor who is from Africa (although he's been in the US for quite awhile). We often have sit downs where we discuss the differences between us as well as the similarities. No matter what you may perceive to be the truth, to racist America we are quite the same…some of us just do not have an accent!!!

In a recent discussion we spoke of the cohesiveness and power we would possess if we were to unite our strengths we bring to the table. Africans who come over to the states have no preconceived “Can’t do” mentality when it comes to business opportunities like many African-Americans. They don’t have 250 years plus of mental control to fight through. So, when they have an idea for wealth they move forward without hesitation. This does not mean they won’t face stiff resistance from mainstream America.

Now, African-Americans due to our assimilation know the systems and have over the years figured out how to get around certain roadblocks. Our names often do not signify Nigerian decent so at the very least we may not get thrown in the trash just because of the spelling of our names (let me point out that we do have certain issues with this from time to time as well…you know who you are!).

Imagine what our two mentalities could accomplish if we were to unite as a powerful force. We could possibly experience growth and power much like our Hispanic brothers and sisters. Those who speak English and know the US systems pave the way for their families and race. In the coming month (hopefully in Aug) we’ll be hosting an open forum for both communities to be able to communicate our differences. It is my hope that many will come and this forum will allow a positive dialogue to occur creating lifelong liaisons.
