Survive 365...Survival book list!

Listed below are a few books I would add to your body of literature you have on your books shelf at home (for those who don't have them already). Books are the key to our information, education, historical context and future discovery. It is important to read everyday to feed your mind. Let's start our journey into discovering a proper mindset of oneself...ENJOY!
"The Classics"-These are books that almost need not be mentioned. Books like, (Think and Grow Rich, Richest Man in Babylon, Who Moved My Cheese, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Rich Dad, Poor Dad & Cash Flow Quadrants, etc...) and on the list goes! Yes I would recommend these and many more of the so called classics. Its what I would call standard reading, the 101 of getting your mind conditioned for the pathway to success. However, allow me to veer off along a narrow path a bit and recommend a few books that many of you will see and shake your head in agreement, others will scratch your head and say…I've never heard of that one? So we'll begin…
1. Your "Spiritual Guide"---what ever that GREAT book should be! I'm a insatiable reader, so I've read most "religious texts" and all of them at some point emphasize 2 things. Faith and Action! Without the 2 you'd be lost anyways, so I recommend you dive into whichever book you hold as your spiritual guide. After all, all of these other books only copy what is already spoken in them eons ago!
2. Financial Success by Wallace Wattles--- This book is only 93 pages in text, yet it packs a punch and gets to the point. Written in the 70's it speaks on the principles that "The Secret" brought to the forefront a few years ago. An excellent book on developing your mind "First"!

3. The Art of The Comeback by The Donald---Most people speak on "The Art of the Deal" however I appreciate this book mainly because Trump has a perceived edge in this story. Now those who decide to read Mr. Trumps books need know his philosophy is to WIN at all costs! He speaks about his failures and mistakes in the book. I always note if The Donald can fail at real estate any one of us less established "gurus" lol can easily bite the dust. Read how confidence and the will not to give up are invaluable! Also, he touches how having a strong willed woman by your side is not the worst thing a person can have!

4. The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene--- Wow, I remember when this book was ssssooooo hard to find. Recently, it's the book of the year. Make no mistake it's been out for a while (10years). The principles of this book go back to the beginning of time. Or at the very least, the beginning of the Renaissance Period. The book can become overwhelming if you are determined to master and practice all 48 laws. Some of which you would never need to use given most peoples state. Also, it's a bit cutthroat in it's directives. Remember the people who mastered these "Powers" either mastered them or perished. We now merely practice them as a leisure function. Nevertheless, It's a powerful read that you can study for many a moons!

5. The E-Myth by Michael Gerber---If you want to stop being a "Self Employed" Entreprenuer and become what Robert Kiyosaki speaks much about….A Business Owner then this book is a must read. When I first started my first company a decade ago it went under almost a quickly as it began. I then decided to get a mentor and this was the first book he had me read. It changed all the theories on starting my own business I thought I knew. It is the reason why my company is a success today! No it wasn't my brilliance…LOL

These are 5 reads not in any particular order that I'd like you to consider. They are also books that you'll need to read many times, because each time you'll get something you missed the previous time through. Come back and see what I have for you for my next 5 works of wisdom! Remember, what Thomas Jefferson once said " I can not live without books".

"Books are the collective greatness within all of mankind to express our individual Divinity". D.K. Garrison (Author of "How to Survive The Next 365")

Introducing....Dawud Anyabwile to 365

The year was 1980…the comic X-Men 135…the title “Dark Phoenix Saga”! This was the breakthrough comic for me (I was hooked). I became a very avid reader of comic which later allowed me to progress to novels and other literary works. However, my beginnings came from a love affair with comics. ONLY ONE THING…there were not many folk that looked like me as a superhero?! The only ones you could find were Black Panther or Luke Cage, for the most part.

In 1989 something extraordinary happened… (Big City Comics was born!!). Initially presented at the New York Expo, the following year they earned a spot on the Arsenio Hall Show! Dawud Anyabwile and Guy A. Sims are the principle creators of this very influential comic book series. Their names will go down with the likes of Jack Kirby, John Byrne and the great George Perez as prolific illustrators/inkers for comics of our times.

What you’re about to view is an interview I was able to do with Dawud at his recent Exhibit (which, by the way, will be ongoing until June 30th) at the African American Research Library on Historic Auburn Ave in Atlanta .

This Philadelphia native has sold over 750,000 copies and yet this is only a scratch on the future exploits left to achieve. In my opinion, (which in this blog counts for a lot... LOL) every youth, teen, and adult should have this bit of literature in their household. You can purchase previous series as well as future books at www.brothermancomics.com

This is Part 1...

...STAY TUNED for the conclusion!!!

The 1st 500 days...

So what has our 44th President of the United States been up to these past 500 days?

1. He inherited a 10.6 Trillion dollar deficit from the previous administration, but he has amassed a 2 Trillion dollar bill himself. Now, some would argue that he had no choice in order to get our economy back on track while other says he is fiscally irresponsible.
2. He battled the entire Republican Congress to pass the 1st major piece of legislation since Pres. Teddy Kennedy. The jury is out on whether this law will ultimately be good for the American people or just a dramatic 24 hour reality show we all watched daily!
3. He has taken the bull by the horns with our conflict in Afghanistan by increasing the number of troops in that region (30,000 more). I still say if the Russians couldn’t win against Afghanistan during their hay day why are we going to try?
4. He set a “get out of town” date for the war in Iraq. (Aug. 2010)
5. He established a Nuclear Arms reduction Pact with Russia
6. He’s managed to piss off the one country who loved our dirty “you know what”….Israel
7. He helped pass the “equal pay for women’s act.
8. He appointed Supreme Ct. Justice Sonia Sotomayor and nominated another Elena Kagan
9. He has his own Louisiana crisis (and it’s not a hurricane) with BP Oil spill

Wow! All this in less than 2 years! Is it me or have you noticed that our President has much more gray hair than he once did? I’m curious, how would you grade the President? What do you think the next 2 years will be like? And do you think he will do enough to win a second term?

Meet Ms. Nariscia Dede Lott!!!

"Weepin Willa" by Nariscia Lott

Nariscia Lott was born on December 23, 1973, in Chicago, Illinois; but she was raised in Indianola, Mississippi, in a small house with her two sisters, mother and grandfather. Born with a severe case of idiopathic scoliosis, she attributes her creativity and story writing talent to stubbornness and a vivid imagination. "Weepin' Willa: A Collection of Short Stories" is Lott's first self-published book.

Ladies and Gentleman, we are here with a phenomenal writer/author Ms. Nariscia Lott! Ms. Lott welcome!

Hello! Thanks for having me!

Tell us a little bit about yourself Ms. Lott?

Well, I’m “that lil Lott girl”, Jessie Mae’s daughter. I’m 36 years old (but if anybody asks, tell ‘em I’ll be 24 on my next birthday), single (never married…even though I’ve selected my groom), no children, no pets. I have two sisters—one older, one younger. I work as an Administrative Assistant during the day in the Atlanta area, where I’ve lived for the past 11 years. I grew up in a town called Indianola, Mississippi…graduated in the top 10 of the Gentry High School Class of 1992. I could go on and on (even though, admittedly, I hate talking about myself). What else would you like to know? J I’m new at this.

Please tell our readers what was the catalyst to writing your novel?

For the longest time, I’ve had 3 books in my head. I’d rather try and fail than to wonder “what would’ve happened if...” I finally summoned up the courage to share this part of myself—my true self, my passion.

Is this your first major literary work?

Yes. I guess you could say this is “major”. I’ve done some stuff here and there in the past; but this is my first book.

Who were some other authors that inspired you to write?

I think Alice Walker absolutely changed my life when I read “Possessing the Secret of Joy”! But I’d have to say that I had been bitten by the bug long before I even heard of her.

I’ve always had a vivid imagination; but it wasn’t until I discovered (and I use the term loosely…because I was snooping through her things at the time) my older sister’s notebook that I knew I wanted to write what I dreamed about…what I saw, felt, and heard in my head…so that other people could experience it, too. She had written some stories—one story, in particular—that turned on a light inside me. I felt like I was there. I could hear the rain. I could feel the character’s pain. I didn’t feel like I was reading a story…I was gaining life experience! And I wanted to replicate that feeling in other people. Maybe then, I wouldn’t feel like I was the only one in the world who sees things the way that I see them. You know?

There were so many things that I liked about your book! Where did your decision come from to base your chapter off of dates in time and to not use chronological order?

THANK YOU! I’m so glad you liked it! That means a lot to me!

Weepin’ Willa is a series of books that I hope to write and publish over the course of the next year or two. I call them “factions”—a mix of fiction with a whole lotta fact! Since the first book is to be my introduction to the world, I wanted to write it based on pure instinct. I just went with my gut. That’s how I write…how I live my life. Take me as I am or leave me where I stand. I, literally, spent years going back and forth on the topic of how to organize the chapters. I tried putting them in chronological order and didn’t like it. It wasn’t me. I wanted the reader to feel as though we were sitting on the couch, shoes off, talking like old friends. “You want some more coffee?” In conversations, things aren’t always discussed in perfect order. That just doesn’t seem natural to me…not for this book. I guess it’s because there were several stories—not just ONE main story—throughout the book.

In your book you expose your heart to everyone and it’s a brilliant portrayal of where your mindset was at each of these moments in time. Was it difficult sharing so much with the world?

Yes and no. I’m a very honest person. Some might say “cut ‘n dry”. *giggles* I’m not always comfortable with sharing so much of myself…verbally. There’s a lot of editing that goes on in my head before I actually SAY anything…which is why I have a tendency to listen more than I speak.

But when I write, there are no boundaries. Whatever comes up comes out. And my mind is always going, going, going! I have to type as fast as I can to get it all out. Every little insignificant detail…I write it down. Thoughts within my thoughts…write ‘em down. And hopefully, people will get something from reading my work.

The book starts off with the death of your mother, proceeds to costly fires, near death episodes, early life scoliosis, miscarriages, shootings, and false loves. What is it that you want the reader to take away, after reading this book?

The death of my mother left a huge hole in me…that has yet to heal. I had to start there. But you know what? Shit happens. Life must go on. Giving up is not an option.

Would you describe your book as an accurate portrayal of your life in a collection of stories, an autobiography or memoirs?

There’s a lot of truth in this book. I’m most comfortable with describing it as a collection of stories inspired by true events.

Who designed your book cover for you?

Me. You likey? *giggles* I knew exactly how I wanted the cover to look. I did it myself. I love my eyes. I wanted them on the cover. Just the eyes with nothing else to distract you from looking into them. A bold, instant connection. I hope so, anyway.

What made you choose self-publishing vs publishing houses? What advice can you give those (would be authors) out there who want to write a book and are looking at self-publishing as an option?

I chose to self-publish because I wanted to maintain creative control. Life forced me to come up with alternative ways to accomplish even the simplest of tasks (because of my physical limitations). I never even considered taking the traditional route. But I must say that self-publishing is a tough row to hoe. Everything comes out of my pocket (and my pockets don’t exactly run deep!); it can be frustrating, at times, because I can’t do everything that I’d like to do (marketing, PR, etc.). I always dreamed that I’d publish my first book, Oprah would read it and invite me to be on her show, and then, she’d want to turn it into a movie. But once I started the process of contacting printers (and Oprah announced that she was retiring *rolling my eyes*), I quickly discovered that writing the book was the easy part.

To those who want to self-publish, I say… be patient and financially prepared. Do the research. Have a plan—including marketing—in place BEFORE you print that first copy.

Please tell all of the readers where they can purchase your book and find more information about you?

Weepin’ Willa: A Collection of Short Stories” can be purchased on www.amazon.com. I am also hustlin’ books out of the trunk of my car. You can find more information and contact me through my website (www.nariscialott.com ), by email (weepin.willa@hotmail.com), or on Facebook (@ Weepin’ Willa).

Do you have plans to tour around the states to share your wonderful story?

*giggles* Um, that’s not in the budget right now. But who knows what tomorrow brings? I hope to have a reason to tour the states. I hope to generate a demand for my work. So, we’ll see…

What’s next for Nariscia Lott?

Well, I’m working on book #2. I hope to have it finished by the end of the year.

But first, I’m launching a literary magazine, DreamSpeak Literary Magazine (www.dreamspeaklitmag.com). If all goes well, the online monthly magazine will launch around July 1st…and I want to do a quarterly print issue (beginning with the first one in September). The purpose of creating this magazine is to provide a platform for teens to express themselves creatively. I’m currently accepting submissions; the guidelines are posted on the DreamSpeak Facebook fan page.

Oh, and I’ll be attending the Atlanta Black Book Expo in Atlanta in August of this year. I’m really looking forward to that.

There are a few other things that I’m dabbling in and I have lots of ideas in my head; but those are the major blips on my radar right now.

[Epilogue]

There you have it folks! I do hope you've enjoyed our little chat! Let me just say, you really need to get this book. It has been a long time since I've read a book that keeps me drawn in and feels so heart felt. While reading the book, I always felt like i was there as a bystander watching every moment go by. I promise, you'll not be disappointed! Ms. Lott's way with words and descriptions are uncanny!!! See you all next time :-)

"De-ratify" the 14th Admendment?!

Don’t look now but we are living in a police state! On April 23rd, Arizona Congress passed a law that Pres. Obama said “threatened to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans”. When Gov. Jan Brewer(Rep) signs off on the bill, we (the United States) will look an awful like Germany circa 1935-1945! Hey don’t look at me (I did not say it…although I was thinking it)! Cardinal Roger Mahoney of L.A. said "the authority’s ability to demand docs was like “Nazism”…

“Where are you’re papers?” (in a surly East German accent)

The bill says:

  1. Failure to carry immigration docs is a crime.
  2. Police have the power “when practical” to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.
  3. People can sue the local Government if they believe the state immigration law is not being enforced? (wow! I wish we could do this with other laws..oh wait...we can! LOL)

Is this a racial bill? Or, are the citizens of Arizona sick and tired of the rise in kidnappings and murders in their border towns?

Is this simply another election time bill that forces both political sides to draw a line down the middle? Just for the record past Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed a similar bill when she was Gov. She is now our Homeland Security Secretary (Dem).

Now, to the point…

What race of immigrants will be next!?

Do you believe our ever increasing African immigrants will be scrutinized in cities where they seem to be a large minority/majority? Will someone take a look at the Haitian overflow in areas like South Florida? Should they?

Do you think there are any illegal Asians in our country? Believe it or not, there are very powerful Asian gangs who control various nefarious activities in cities like L.A. and San Francisco. Do authorities round them up and check their papers?

True story! I have a distant family member (from Cuban descent) that has been naturalized, paying taxes and married for almost 30 years in the U.S. One day he fails to come home from work. After a time, his wife’s concern grows into hysteria. She reports him as a possible missing person. After a few months she is told by the Federal Government that he was taken from his place of employment and detained in another state! (Why? It's any ones guess) His wife then hires an attorney who slowly gets a judge to force the Government to drop all charges. Happy ending? NO! by this time, she is informed that her husband of 20 plus years has been deported back to Cuba!!! Yes, Fidel Castro. Yes, a country he does not know!

Best part is…there’s nothing she, you or I can do about it! This may not be a major concern to you because these crimes against immigrants don’t affect you (YET)! However, if this madness is not stopped how long will it be before some congressman tries to de-ratify the 14th Amendment and declares African Americans really are not citizens!!?

Remember…we are all immigrants here….what makes one race better or more qualified than another?
